The role

Here at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! It takes a great deal of people from different backgrounds, with diverse skills and experience to serve our force area effectively. Think you have what it takes to help us make a difference? This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Communications and Engagement Department as a Media & Communications Assistant.

Help shape the way our communities see and hear from Northumbria Police. In this role, you’ll support the delivery of impactful communications that builds trust and confidence across the region. You’ll play a key part in creating high‑quality, engaging content for a wide range of audiences and platforms – responding proactively to opportunities and reactively to emerging issues. One day you could be out with officers filming footage of raids – the next you could be supporting with media briefing.

What

you’ll do
  • Work as part of a team to provide a comprehensive external multi-media and communications service to Northumbria Police.
  • Support efficient and effective handling of media enquiries, formulating responses on behalf of the Force, to maintain and enhance public confidence.
  • Create high-quality written, visual and video content for external audiences, including our own channels and the media, ensuring this is targeted to optimise engagement.
  • Collaborate with Media Advisers, officers and staff, to share information with the media and on our own channels, to prevent/detect crime and increase community safety.
  • Use social media management tools to publish and monitor content and engage with external audiences.

What you’ll bring
  • A good standard of education, supported by excellent computer literacy, strong IT skills, and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
  • Creative content production skills, with the ability to shoot, edit and deliver engaging content across a range of digital channels and for different audiences.
  • Strong organisational abilities, including effective diary management, the capacity to stay calm under pressure, and accuracy when working to deadlines.
  • A proactive, flexible and self‑motivated approach, with the ability to use your own initiative, self‑learn new platforms, and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with a solid understanding of social networking platforms and how to use them effectively.
  • Commitment to professionalism and inclusion, demonstrating resilience, an understanding of diversity, equality and inclusion, and the ability to travel across the Force area as required to fulfil the needs of the role.

We know it’s important for you to feel that you’re not only part of a great team, but part of a community. We welcome applications from suitably qualified people from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

Harnessing these differences creates a productive environment in which everyone feels valued, and their talents are fully utilised. Appointments are based on merit alone.
