Job SummaryThe Assistant Director of Photography, assigned to Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of photography initiatives. The role also serves as secondary personnel for strategic videography development and implementation, enhancing the reputation, visibility, and brand of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Center. Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director for Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Marketing and Communications, this position captures high‑quality still images that align with brand and marketing goals and produces story‑driven images reflecting the full range of activities at the Center for use in marketing and communications efforts, including news, public relations, marketing, social media, web, and more.
Responsibilities- Plan and execute photo shoots, brainstorming concepts and collaborating with marketing, design, and creative teams.
- Capture and deliver compelling visual content, including weekly headshots in a portrait studio and event photography during evenings and weekends.
- Prepare for editorial photo shoots, edit images, and maintain a digital asset library in a digital asset management system.
- Package images for final deliverables and ensure timely responses to campus requests.
- Serve as the second videographer, developing and executing a digital marketing video strategy that includes acquisition, production, and editing to enhance the University’s health and medical brand.
- Produce marketing and social media reels, manage studio and field‑based video production, convert formats of completed edited products, and stay current on camera, processing, and editing techniques.
- Master’s degree in photography, cinematography, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field (Master’s preferred). Equivalent experience is acceptable.
- Thorough understanding of the healthcare industry and academic healthcare environment.
- Proficient in advanced photography techniques, visual storytelling, brand consistency, photo composition, lighting, color theory, exposure control, and image quality standards.
- Knowledge of institutional branding standards and strategic photography/videography planning aligned with organizational goals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor visual assets and messaging to diverse audiences.
- Proficient skill in digital and social media platforms to amplify organizational messaging.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, capable of juggling multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strategic thinking and problem‑solving skills to identify and capitalize on opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
- Experience researching, organizing, planning, coordinating, managing, and directing photo production projects.
- Experience developing and implementing successful visual assets for communications and marketing needs.
- Experience with photography and videography equipment, editing software, and digital asset management systems such as Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere, and Bynder.
- Experience operating DSLR and mirrorless cameras, managing shutter speeds, apertures, lenses, filters, and effects.
- Experience operating photography and videography lighting equipment for portable and studio setups.
- Experience with event photography, including live activity shots, candid shots, posed shots, and studio headshots.
- Progressively responsible experience in photography, videography, communications, or marketing.
$66,000 to $72,000 annually
