The Julian Bond Papers Project is an innovative digital project that seeks not only to make the life's work of Civil Rights icon Julian Bond freely available to the public but also to render accessible the editorial process to community historians, crowdsourced transcriptionists, and student apprentices. The Assistant Editor of the Julian Bond Papers Project at the University of Virginia is a new, grant-funded position intended to support and extend digital publishing workflow, both academically and technically. Please apply if you have a background in African American history, literature, or related field and an interest in digital publishing and project management. Previous experience working on a digital humanities project and/or in documentary editing a plus.
Responsibilities- Support cataloging and digital asset management of manuscript materials
- Contribute to transcription management in several data management systems, including the library's digital asset system, From The Page , and a Drupal digital database
- Participate in proofreading and annotation workflow and data management
- Work with project management and student interns to organize the entire document publication process, from image capture through publication and user experience
- Contribute to public engagement through social media and annual event support
- Education:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably with knowledge of African American literature, personal narrative, the history of race, the Civil Rights era, or a related field.
- Student-facing work a plus, such as contributing to internship structures or outreach programs
- Familiarity with tools used for workflow, student coordination, and project communication, such as Sharepoint, Microsoft Teams, Slack
- Experience in data cleaning, Drupal, and/or digital databases
- Experience in social media and other promotion
- Experience or aptitude in digital publishing tools like Excel, data and content management systems, or digital imaging software
- Ability to meet strict deadlines
- Flexibility to changing tasks based on grant, event, and other variable priorities and deadlines
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
Salary RangeThe anticipated hiring range is $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with education and experience.

- This is a 4-year restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
- This position is hybrid, with significant work completed remotely, and additional on-site presence in Charlottesville, VA, as needed, in accordance with UVA's remote work guidelines.
