About the Role This role supports the Research Division’s publishing and communications efforts by contributing to both digital and print scholarly publications. Working closely with Research Division staff, Communications, and an internal advisory committee, the position plays a key role in identifying topics and authors and shepherding Verso blog content from development through publication. In addition, the role provides essential editorial and production support to the Editor in Chief of the Huntington Library Quarterly, including copyediting and proofreading scholarly articles, managing workflows and publication schedules, coordinating with authors and external vendors, and overseeing image permissions, accessibility standards, and production logistics.
The ideal candidate brings strong editorial judgment, project management skills, and experience working within academic publishing environments.
S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.
This is a limited-term position, budgeted full-time for six months.
Essential DutiesWork with Research Division staff to identify potential topics and authors for Verso; copyedit, proofread, and prepare for publication one Verso blog post per month for six months in consultation with Communications and the internal advisory committee.
Support the Editor in Chief (EIC) of the Huntington Library Quarterly as needed to: copyedit and proofread research articles; manage workflow and publication schedule for the journal; maintain database of article submissions; coordinate with authors to obtain print-quality images, secure rights and permissions, and ensure proper attribution in image captions and proper alt-text descriptions for all non-textual material; communicate with typesetters, graphic designers, and the University of Pennsylvania Press regarding production processes, file transfer, print schedules, and order fulfillment;
coordinate timely processing of invoices, subscriptions, and memberships needed for HLQ operations.
Minimum MA, preferred PhD in humanities or humanistic social science field represented in the HLQ
Minimum 3 years of copyediting experience
Project management/organization
Communication skills
Software, file management, etc.
