We’re looking for an engaging person to assist in the setting up of new sections on What’s on in Cape Town, promoting events, activities and experiences in the Mothercity.
What's on in Cape Town promotes thousands of ‘things to do’ to both local readers and tourists. We are developing area-specific sections that will celebrate the character of various suburbs. The role will be one that suits someone who has excellent organisational and communication skills and who finds as much joy in a well-planned spreadsheet as in meeting people and helping their businesses to connect to new markets.
Ideally they will also have proven writing skills (articles, essays, blog posts etc) and want to gain experience in the world of promotion.
All training will be given, but applicants must have a natural aptitude for the role and an organised mind. They will be given all content and structure, though may need to do some independent research to check details. This is an ideal opportunity for a young student or graduate wanting to earn a bit of money while honing their writing and editing skills, and to gain an insight into the creative, cultural and tourism industries.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Identifying the character of an area
- Sourcing the best local tourism-related businesses in that area
- Researching and writing up descriptions
- Liaising with small business holders and managing the CRM database
- Writing articles
- Liaising with the social media team to discuss campaigns to promote the area
- Extracting statistics as needed
- Creating reports
- Writing up case studies
We are a small, friendly team all working from home but with regular online check-ins. We have had over 150 young students and graduates work for us over the past 15 years, and have received such feedback as "Because of you and this job, I've grown in many ways, discovered what I might want the rest of my life to look like, and gained invaluable experience."
The successful applicant will
- Be a hard worker with precise attention to detail
- Be 18 years or older
- Have excellent written English (i.e. great grammar as well as a good way with words)
- Be dynamic and driven and full of initiative
- Be eager to learn
- Be a team player and excellent communicator
- Be able to attend regular online meetings
- Be based in and knowledgeable about Cape Town
The successful applicant will work directly under the owner and founder of What’s on in Cape Town, Daisy Ions. For someone who is willing to embrace the role, there is plenty of potential for growth within the company.
Hours are flexible. Remuneration is R7000pm, depending on experience.
Start date:
early Feb 2026
If seriously interested, please send
a) a brief covering letter (why you would like this role). This can be in the body of the email.
c) contact details for referees (can include teachers)
