Job description: Reporter – Caithness (part-time, three days a week)
Reports to: Content and commercial editor
Key relationships: Content editors, reporters, audience team, multi-media team.
Job purpose: To create engaging and accurate content – written, photographic and video – for the John O’Groat Journal and Caithness Courier digital platforms and print edition newspapers, as well as other Highland News & Media titles across the group as required; helping to drive audience growth and engagement through newsletters, social media and other platforms.
Location: Work from home, Caithness based
Responsibilities:
This is an important role in the development of Highland News & Media’s Caithness team.
The post-holder will be able to work on their own initiative, bringing their own ideas and stories as well as working with the editor and fellow reporters on diary stories and other in-house projects.
The role will include leading our coverage of local court, as well as covering meetings and community events, helping to ensure our web platforms remain the trusted and go-to source for live news, community updates, in-depth investigations, and stories which make an impact.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Producing accurate, legally sound copy from Wick Sheriff Court and Tain Sheriff Court
- Attending community meetings including community councils and protest groups
- Contributing a diverse range of engaging content online and in-print, including words, photographs and video, as well as using other digital tools where appropriate
- An interest in local sport would be welcomed
- Ensuring accuracy and legal compliance of copy
- Abiding by the Editor’s Code of Practice
- Social media posting of your own and others’ content when appropriate; contributing to newsletters and other distribution channels
- Being an ambassador for the business in the community
- Helping to ensure digital and print deadlines are met
- Using analytics tools to monitor audience trends and adapt content according to user needs
To reflect our digital priorities the working pattern for this role will be 3 x 8-hour shifts between 7am and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am and 5pm Saturday and Sunday. However, some work outside of these hours may be required.
