Traveling Construction Materials Technician II – Terracon
Join our Traveling Construction Materials Technician team, where you can embark on new opportunities, develop professionally, and contribute to thrilling projects nationwide. This position involves 100% travel throughout our "Eastern Midwest" division including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. In this role you will work on high‑profile projects such as transportation, commercial buildings, wind farms, and more across many geographic areas.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys traveling, working on a variety of projects, and who is looking to take their construction material testing career to the next level.
- Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel).
- Communicate with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and others regarding the construction site and testing requirements.
- Transport material samples with documentation to the laboratory for further testing.
- Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Terracon Project Manager.
- Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
- Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites (as needed).
- Adhere to strict safety standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and specified procedures.
- Provide clear documentation of findings and results.
- Perform basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
- Communicate information to the Project Manager and other personnel as directed.
- Assist higher‑level technicians on complex tasks.
- Maintain assigned equipment and related calibration.
- Drive a vehicle such as a Ford F‑150 or equivalent.
- Follow safety rules and practices; perform pre‑task planning and report any safety issues to management.
- Maintain quality standards on all projects.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of materials testing experience.
- Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
- NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
- NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical (Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist).
- ICC certification in one or more categories:
Reinforced Concrete, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding. - American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
- Other national, regional, state, and local materials‑related certifications with experience and written examination (as deemed appropriate by Terracon Department Manager).
Position Classified as "Remote Only". Employees do not have a designated onsite workspace and typically work from home or another location.
Salary Range: $19.50 – $27.50 per hour. Base range may be adjusted based on specific location. Compensation is based on individual qualifications and experience.
