A Brief Summary Of This PositionThe Global Commodity Senior Manager leads aspects of the Global Supply Management process for Capital Expenditures (Cap Ex). This position works to identify and drive productivity throughout the Cap Ex category. It networks with Valmont facilities and cross‑functional teams (Operations, Engineering, Quality, Project Management), jointly building a strong project funnel to support Valmont production. The role spearheads sourcing activities on existing and future construction products, as well as all production/facility equipment.
This position also reviews the existing supply base and evaluates suppliers from a GME (Grow, Maintain, Exit) perspective. The Global Commodity Senior Manager – Cap Ex works to improve payment terms with our suppliers and reduce Valmont exposure through robust service/material agreements. The manager works with divisional manufacturing management teams to identify and initiate sourcing projects that achieve cost reduction and deliver competitive advantages through the global sourcing process.
Working with production control, engineering, quality control and manufacturing to source parts, equipment, and construction services, the incumbent also keeps informed of all significant changes to the design and sourcing processes and coordinates activities with the Global Sourcing team.
- This position reports to Director, Global Indirect, and has no direct or indirect reports.
- Requires 50% travel both internationally and domestically, including overnight stays.
- Manages Cap Ex projects – equipment and construction.
- Develops and implements long‑term strategies for suppliers, equipment, and maintenance.
- Manages supplier relationships to meet Valmont requirements for safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and other business terms.
- Negotiates with suppliers to establish competitive contracts and beneficial agreements.
- Responsible for overall management of VA/VE and strategic sourcing projects, ensuring they are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Monitors indexed portions of indirect material spend and makes recommendations to management regarding hedges, lock, forward purchases, etc.
- Conducts detailed supply market analysis – commodities, industries, and suppliers related to Valmont indirect/Cap Ex procurement.
- Produces monthly scorecards and project reporting; prepares annual strategic plan reporting.
- Owns the Material Council process and reporting cadence.
- Reinforces the company’s continuous improvement culture that promotes communication, shared learning, intelligent risk‑taking, creative problem‑solving, and accountability for failures and successes.
- Leads and directs value engineering and cross‑functional team activities.
- Supports and leads supply optimization efforts to include consolidation, dual sourcing, rationalization, and more.
- Supports supplier scorecard efforts and interacts with assigned suppliers to improve performance.
- Supports supplier lean development activities.
- Handles special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience, or Associate’s Degree with 9+ years, or 11+ years of relevant experience.
- Progressive experience in commodity management/supply chain management, operations, and/or engineering.
- Indirect manufacturing, tooling design, product design, and application experience.
- Indirect commodity management experience with high dollar spend.
