Aboutthe Role
Retirement Benefit Counselor — you’ll be the trusted guide for our members as they navigate retirement options. You’ll provide personalized counseling, resolve complex benefit questions, and help members make informed decisions about their future. Beyond one-on-one meetings, you’ll lead engaging seminars and webinars across Missouri, empowering members with knowledge and confidence.
Key Details- Salary:
Minimum starting salary of $55,000 (higher based on relevant experience in public pensions) - Travel: 2–4 overnight trips per month (March–November)
- Impact:
Directly improve the financial security of thousands of public employees
- Provide comprehensive counseling on pension benefits and retirement options
- Interpret statutory and contractual provisions to determine eligibility and benefit amounts
- Verify documentation, calculate benefits, and audit final calculations for accuracy
- Represent MPERS at seminars, orientations, and statewide events
- Develop and update educational materials (workbooks, presentations, webinars, online courses)
- Coordinate annual seminar and webinar schedules
- Strong ability to interpret and apply complex rules and regulations
- Excellent communication skills—both one-on-one and in group presentations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially PowerPoint)
- Ability to learn new technology and manage multiple priorities
- Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
- Integrity, ethics, and confidentiality
- Valid driver’s license and ability to lift up to 20 lbs. for presentation equipment
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- 3+ years of experience in benefits administration, customer relations, insurance, or related fields (Equivalent experience may substitute for formal education on a year-for-year basis)
