Overview

The Team:
The Judicial Administrative Assistant (JAA) team plays a vital role in supporting the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal for British Columbia. This established and highly skilled team provides comprehensive administrative and judicial support to Justices, Associate Judges, and Registrars, ensuring that reasons for judgment are accurate, complete, and professionally presented to the public. With 7 JAAs/Senior JAAs in the Court of Appeal and 32 in the Supreme Court, the team collaborates closely with judicial officers, law clerks, court clerks, CSB staff, and other court personnel, as well as external legal professionals and agencies.

Their work is integral to the efficient functioning of the court system, maintaining the integrity of legal proceedings and public trust in the justice system. Known for their professionalism, dedication, and collaborative spirit, JAAs contribute to a well-organized and responsive judiciary.

The Role

As a Judicial Administrative Assistant, you will provide essential support to the judiciary by preparing and proofreading confidential legal documents, including reasons for judgment, managing diaries and filing systems, coordinating administrative tasks, conducting online legal research, and arranging logistics for meetings and travel. This role is critical to ensuring accuracy and efficiency in court operations, directly impacting the timely and fair delivery of justice.

Job Requirements
  • Secondary school graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent (GED).
  • Legal courses or training focused on Canadian Law, or equivalent jurisdiction.
  • At least three (3) years of office experience.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Legal Administrative Assistant in Canada or equivalent jurisdiction.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to candidates with

  • Successful completion of a Canadian equivalent Legal Secretary, Legal Assistant or Paralegal program.
  • Experience in reading, writing or speaking the French language.
  • Experience as a Judicial Administrative Clerk.
  • Experience working in a legal setting such as court services, judiciary, law office or justice sector.
