What you will doIn this pivotal, hands-on leadership role, you’ll oversee our Durham office and our business growth, working closely with colleagues in our other tax practice locations and across the firm. McConnell Jones is a dynamic firm with 160+ employees and 7 offices. Our 8-person Durham team is primarily made up of tax professionals, with a few auditors. As the Director of Tax & Assurance Services, you’ll provide strategic direction, mentor local tax and audit teams, and be a visible leader for our office.
Your focus will be on tax compliance and planning for a diverse tax practice client base - including NFPs, consolidated C-Corps, partnerships, fiduciaries, multi-state entities and individuals. You’ll also play a small role in business development, expanding our presence in the local market.
You’ll take full ownership of managing deadlines, optimizing workflow, and ensuring priorities remain aligned with client needs and firm standards. As a trusted advisor to our clients, you’ll offer insight driven tax strategies and cultivate strong, enduring client relationships. You’ll oversee complex technical reviews and guide teams through IRS and state inquiries and notices with confidence and technical precision. Your operational leadership will shape the culture and performance of the Durham office as you supervise staff, support recruiting efforts, and champion professional development across the team.
Whatyou will need
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring an active CPA license to meet regulatory requirements and adhere to our quality standards. A minimum of 8 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, or a similar environment, will ensure high-quality deliverables, the ability to review work and navigate complex issues with confidence. Apply your leadership experience (at least 3 years) to lead, mentor and develop staff.
Client Accounting Services (CAS) experience will serve you well as you provide technical and strategic support to clients and internal teams, particularly in areas related to bookkeeping, financial statement preparation and complex CAS engagements. Audit experience, especially related to NFP, is a plus, but not required, for candidates with exceptional tax expertise. Leveraging your local market knowledge and established community connections will advance your candidacy.
If you’re a CPA with hands-on tax and review experience, a leadership mindset, and a commitment for small-office growth, backed by the resources of a larger firm, we invite you to join us and become the face of our Durham office.
