. Seeking students and adults with sports knowledge! The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire an Instructor and Traveling Coach. Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager/Coordinator, the employee in this position is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of any portion associated with a recreation program. Independently provides direction to staff, coaches, volunteers, umpire/referees and spectators on issues relating to a program plan and program structure, team selection, rule interpretation, schedules, equipment needs and use, safety of participants, umpires/referees, staff and spectators.

• Teaches participants the importance of sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork.
• Develops team roles for assistant coaches/volunteers and parents.
• Develops team guidelines.
• Distributes and collects program materials such as equipment, plans, uniforms, schedules and forms.
• Responsible for the program equipment and the condition of equipment.
• Assists with the set-up and cleanup of facilities.
• Reports injuries, facility hazards, and program concerns to the Recreation Supervisor/Coordinator.
• Responds to accidents and emergencies in an appropriate manner; administering first aid according to the blood borne pathogen exposure control plan.
• Attends training and organizational meetings.
• Maintains communication with program participants, program staff, and office staff.
• Resolves conflicts between participant parents, participants, coaches and officials/umpires.
• Contributes to a cooperative working effort by demonstrating a willingness to perform other job-related work, as required or requested. The interdependency of operations is recognized and the abilities and skills exist to do other work as required or requested. Assistance is given to others and special projects are completed as scheduled or requested. This is a recognized and accepted part of being a member of the program staff.

In addition to the above, depending on position, will also perform duties below.

• Instructs, coaches and leads specialized practices/lessons in the sport or activity (i.e. golf, tennis, track, arts & crafts, etc.).

• Travels to other communities to compete against skilled teams. Teaches participants advanced and technical rules and regulations of the sport (i.e. baseball, football, volleyball, basketball, etc.).

Wage range for these seasonal, limited-term positions is $12.00 to $16.00 per hour depending on qualifications, budget and/or position. There are no benefits associated with limited-term positions.

Job Requirements: High School or college level experience required. Student or adult with sports knowledge. Supervision and leadership techniques/skills desired. Experience playing, coaching or being part of a sport or program of similar nature. Work with minimum supervision. Valid driver’s license required with good driving record.
