Stephen Center has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since 1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offerings provide safe and secure housing while individuals and families complete an assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residents have access to dual diagnosis support services via the HERO addiction/recovery program.
100% of Stephen Center shelter supportive housing participants are living in poverty. Housing transition support identifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve or maintain permanent housing through case management, life skills, and behavioral health services. Stephen Center serves approximately 250 people daily in all programs.
The Resident Support Specialist is responsible for the care and oversight of the clients residing in the mental health and substance abuse program. This person ensures services for residents are consistent with regulations and established best practices. The primary duty is to be of service to residents and to ensure they have an overall positive experience.
Key Accountabilities- Ensure all safety and security guidelines are followed.
- Check property of new and existing clients, ensuring all items are transferred to the heat room.
- Assure the office is fully staffed during the night hours of operations.
- Assist clients with questions, problems, and emergency situations.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate client behavior using Program rules as guidelines, initiating appropriate consequences as necessary.
- Monitor and log client medication, including counting medication upon arrival and observing daily intake in partnership with Case Managers.
- Inspect rooms for order and cleanliness.
- Follow up with clients violating rules in partnership with Case Managers.
- Keep hallways and rooms clean and orderly.
- Direct clients to follow through with chores.
- Answer client and agency questions.
- Answer incoming calls and distribute messages for clients.
- Monitor front doors and greet guests appropriately.
- Collect exit information upon departure.
- Generate incident reports as necessary.
- Clearly and accurately communicate with staff regarding client intakes.
- Data entry into appropriate EHR system as assigned.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
- Work experience in human services preferred.
- Ability to communicate verbally two‑way.
- Standing, walking, kneeling, pushing/pulling periodically and lifting up to 25 pounds periodically.
- Conduct oneself professionally to support recovery from mental illness, co‑occurring disorders and overall wellness.
- Abide by all specific program and agency procedures, policies, and requirements.
- Act with honesty and integrity, serving as a role model for clients.

- No exposure to weather conditions; moderate noise level.
