Position: Automotive/Diesel Mechanic - Omaha - Tools Provided!

Job Posting:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated Diesel technician to join our team at the Elkhorn District Shop. As part of a supportive team, you will maintain and repair heavy‑equipment, ensuring it remains on the road and supports the free travel throughout Nebraska.

Pay rate: $22.756 per hour. Additional pay: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, $1/hour after 3 years, $1/hour after 5 years for holders of a CDL performing CDL functions regularly.

Job Duties
  • Perform highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of multiple makes and models of heavy‑duty trucks, road construction and maintenance equipment and medium and lightweight vehicles.
  • Fabricate and repair equipment and parts by using welders, welding materials, and methods to adapt incompatible parts, replace unavailable parts and secure attachments.
  • Calibrate systems on heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment to allow operators to drive safely and efficiently.
  • Inspect new equipment to ensure it meets specifications and road‑ready.
  • Evaluate equipment for adjustments to accommodate auxiliary attachments, equipment, and operating systems; install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic system components.
  • Maintain hydraulics, install and monitor electrical systems, repair steering, suspension, brake, drive train, fuel systems and diesel or gasoline engines.
  • Perform varied snow removal tasks, preventative maintenance on equipment, and assist in general upkeep of assigned equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment or post‑high school vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics including instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and automotive/diesel mechanical maintenance and repair practices, equipment, and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications: A degree in Automotive Diesel Mechanics, with experience in the repair of trucks or heavy equipment. Experience in welding and fabrication. Basic computer experience. Possess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire through our in‑house CDL training program. Costs to obtain permit will be covered by the department.

Other: A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with O restriction and tanker endorsement required within 90 days of hire. Must be able to be placed on‑call and respond to emergencies and special events. Work performed in adverse weather conditions and traffic safety incidents. Regular and reliable attendance required. Must be able to report to work for snow and other highway emergencies within 45 minutes under normal driving conditions and be in an “on‑call” status.
