Nature of WorkThis is skilled maintenance, service, and repairs on light, medium, heavy truck, construction, fire apparatus, gasoline, diesel motorized vehicles, forestry, small engine and golf turf maintenance equipment, as well as other equipment. Work may include assisting with complex or advanced repairs. Work is performed under the direction and general supervision of a foreman.
Education and ExperienceThe knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.
High school diploma or its equivalent AND two (2) years of experience as an automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic, including experience with gasoline, diesel, and electrically powered equipment OR an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
Special Qualifications- Must possess a valid class "A" commercial driver's license with "N" endorsement, and air brake certification by the end of the probationary period.
- Must possess a forklift operator's permit by the end of the probationary period.
- Must possess a Second Grade Hoisting and Engineer's Certificate by the end of the probationary period.
- Must possess a motor vehicle A/C license valid under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA approved program by the end of probationary period.
- Must be in possession of tools specified by the City which will be inspected and approved by a shop supervisor.
- Must be willing to purchase additional hand tools as needed.
$56,222.40 with step increases to $70,969.60 Annually

The examination will consist of a training and experience form designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position. The training and experience form will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to test for the position. The form must be completed and returned to the Human Resources Department by December 22, 2025 (passing score 60%).
Final eligibility list will be the training and experience form weighted 100%.
To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months.

- Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline, diesel, and battery powered engines and of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic repair methods applicable to engines and related equipment.
- Knowledge of, and ability to operate, a computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
- Knowledge of the operation and servicing requirements of light, heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction, and fire apparatus equipment.
- Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and requirements of mechanical maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines, hybrid and electric vehicles.
- Knowledge of medium and heavy trucks, construction, fire apparatus and automotive equipment; pneumatic/hydraulic systems, impeller and vacuum pumps.
- Skill in the care and proper use of journeyman-level tools and related mechanical equipment used in the automotive/diesel mechanical trade.
- Skill in locating and repairing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical defects in the automotive, medium/heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction, fire apparatus and mechanical equipment.
