Job Title: Journeyman Electrician – Generator Maintenance

Location: Omaha Public Schools Service Center, 4041 N. 72nd St

Reports To: Maintenance Manager, Service Center

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 261 Days 12 Month / 8 hours per day

Position Purpose

The primary role will be managing the District's generator repair and maintenance work requests. All electricians are responsible for supporting the maintenance and repair off facility electrical distribution systems, lighting, and equipment from the interface with the power company service. This includes work to maintain and repair electrical equipment exterior to the facility, including pumps, timers, lighting (security, stadium, and parking lot), lighting controls, and electric scoreboards.

This individual will plan, layout, and install fixtures, distribution systems, and equipment as part of limited-scale remodeling projects and will analyze working drawings of new construction to ensure adherence to district specifications and standards. This individual will work in a service-oriented environment and will routinely be required to solve problems, establish priorities, and plan for the completion of small-scale jobs.

Duty may include evening shift assignments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must have a current Journeyman’s Electrical License recognized by the City of Omaha and/or the State of Nebraska.
  • Must have a minimum of five years of full-time experience as a journeyman electrician.
  • Must have Extensive experience in generator maintenance and repair.
  • Have the ability to perform duties as outlined.
  • Must have general knowledge of various types of electrical equipment including ohm and amperage meters, test equipment, general hand tools, and power tools.
  • Must have avalid Nebraska driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of personal computer and

    Microsoft Office software, including electronic work order software.
  • Must meet insurability requirements of the school district's insurance carrier.
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Will perform preventive maintenance tasks for a variety of types of generators, including inspecting and testing the operation of the equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs alternating current electrical systems on generators, automatic transfer switches, power inverters, generator controls, and engine-related mechanical failures
  • Repairs and replaces generators, motors, electrical power switching mechanisms, control relays, and associated system components
  • Diagnoses malfunctions of generators and power generation and control systems
  • Will perform preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning and tightening of electrical connections in panel boxes, control centers, and disconnects; meg-homing of motors; balancing of ampere draw on electric motor and panels; and checking outlets for proper wiring and grounding.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors to complete regular load bank testing, or self-perform if appropriate equipment is available.
  • Accurately and consistently maintain logs for all generator equipment, and proactively collaborate with and make recommendations to management on future capital repair and replacement planning.
  • Ability to communicate baseline-level training to school staff (head custodians, building engineers, etc.), including equipment location, components, initial troubleshooting, and terminology.
  • Ballasts will be replaced in fluorescent, high-pressure sodium, mercury vapor, LED, and metal halide fixtures.
  • Will repair or replace electric switches, outlets, relays, contractors, circuit breakers, panels, switch gear, gears, wiring, light fixtures (including exit, emergency, and warning lights), and athletic stadium, parking lot, and security lighting systems.
  • Will diagnose and repair problems in scoreboards, stage lighting, and associated controls.
