Job Title: Fire Alarm Technician

Location: Service Center, 4041 N 72 Street, Omaha, NE 68131

Reports To: Supervisor of Maintenance, Service Center

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 261 Duty Days / Non-Exempt

Salary: Full‑time negotiated position. Salary grade 50L based on negotiated agreement.

Qualifications and Competencies

• Minimum of five years of experience at the fully qualified level in the fire alarm/low voltage field is mandatory.
• Possess a state fire alarm installer license, state fire alarm inspector license, or Nicet level II certification.
• License to inspect fire extinguishers.
• Demonstrated ability to use the computer as a maintenance‑level aide is mandatory.
• Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair fire alarm systems and components.
• Install fire alarm components.
• Inspect fire alarm systems.
• Inspect fire extinguishers.
• Repair and alter other low‑voltage systems.
• Trade‑related tasks as assigned by the foreman, maintenance manager, or supervisor of maintenance.

Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by manager, foreman, and/or administrators as designated by the superintendent.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

• Ability to climb ladders with tools and equipment weighing up to thirty pounds.
• Ability to lift items weighing up to seventy pounds.
• Ability to access equipment in constricted areas.
• Ability to pass the functional assessment of physical abilities. Test will be arranged by OPS.

Equipment: Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Local travel will be required.

Interrelations

• Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
• Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day‑to‑day tasks.
• Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
• Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
• Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

In order for schools and departments to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave. Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator. All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

This position is treated as a full‑time non‑exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
