As Assigned by OPS Administration.

Reports To:

Building Principal.

Work Schedule:

Full-time, 10 month, 40 hours/week, 196 days/year. Salary:  Step 1 Hourly Rate $22.39.

Position Purpose

The Security Officer promotes attitudes of student responsibility and assists administrators, teachers, and staff with the safety of students and staff and security of the facilities.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Patrols and monitors hallways, stairwells, toilet facilities, outside facilities, and other public and unsupervised places of the school to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and to secure the facility.
  • Ensures smooth traffic flow of students through hallways, assisting students with on-time arrival to class and assigned locations.
  • Assists with student supervision during breakfast and lunch periods, as well as morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
  • Removes disruptive students from classes when needed.
  • Notifies building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
  • Assists visitors with directions and secures proper identification.
  • Detects, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Challenges unauthorized visitors and escorts them to exits.
  • Promotes student responsibility for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model and dressing/grooming professionally.
  • Displays ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies.
  • Participates in appropriate in-service and workshop programs as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

This position requires the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners and fax machine, and compliance with OPS guidelines.

Travel

Local travel required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and use information from written materials and visual displays.
  • Must work in standing/walking positions frequently throughout the shift.
  • Must work outdoors during arrival and dismissal as well as building ground checks.
  • Must engage in physical activities that include reaching overhead, squatting/bending, lifting, pushing and pulling, kneeling, climbing, and running.
  • Additional demands may be required upon request from the Supervisor.
Interrelations
  • Contact with district personnel, students, parents, and community.
  • Works with a diverse population requiring ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly and professional manner.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • Employees must perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours unless approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from supervisor or building administrator.
  • Employees required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and suitable for their position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Experience in security related work or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Possess knowledge of, and ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices in school security.
  • Experience working in an urban, public education setting preferred.
  • Successful experience working with children and youth.
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Exhibit personality with interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and community.
