As a Seasonal Grounds Worker, you will work directly with the garden's grounds team to gain practical work experience in aspects of a botanical garden's operations. You will spend time working in several areas of the gardens, including turf, trees, equipment, and various maintenance duties. This will include opportunities to assist with equipment repairs and general maintenance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Maintain garden beds, lawns, pathways, and landscaped areas through mowing, trimming, edging, raking, and debris removal.
- Assist with planting, watering, weeding, mulching, deadheading, and general care of ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs.
- Support seasonal horticultural tasks such as spring and fall clean-ups, annual change-outs, and preparation.
- Operate hand tools and power equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers) safely and in accordance with garden standards.
- Assist with the care and presentation of curated plant collections under the guidance of the Grounds Superintendent.
- Help prepare outdoor spaces for public programs, special events, and exhibits.
- Monitor garden areas for plant health concerns, safety hazards, and report concerns promptly.
- Interact courteously with visitors, answering basic questions or directing them to appropriate staff when needed.
- Follow all safety procedures and sustainability practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous grounds, gardening, or outdoor maintenance experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools or willingness to learn.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, humidity, and other weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment.
- Seasonal position, typically running from April to October.
- Schedule will include weekdays, weekends, and occasional holidays.
- Work is primarily performed outdoors on uneven terrain and landscaped grounds.
- Exposure to noise, pollen, dust, insects, and varying weather conditions is expected.
