Clinical Veterinarian

Overview

The Clinical Veterinarian provides veterinary oversight for the care and use of animals at the Elkhorn, NE research facility and other locations as needed. Ensures procedures are humane, legal, ethical, and efficient. Responsibilities include training and membership on the IACUC. The role supports the Attending Veterinarian with management of clinical research facilities and staff.

• Provide veterinary oversight for animal care and use; ensure humane, legal, ethical, and efficient procedures; participate in training and IACUC membership and related activities.
• Assist with management of clinical research facilities and staff; supervise direct reports and provide dotted line oversight of animal caretakers, facilities, and equipment.
• Assist with on-site and off-site clinical studies for product licensure, including guidance on procedures (vaccination, sampling, clinical observations, surgery), data collection, training, and supervision of technicians and staff; conduct necropsies, submit samples for testing, and prepare reports for animals that die during a study; oversee in vivo aspects of testing across departments.
• Act as one of the institution’s licensed animal care providers and oversee implementation of procedures and policies to ensure animal welfare; conduct vendor surveillance as appropriate.
• Develop and conduct training for R&D technical staff in animal care and usage.
• Serve as officer or back-up on IACUC; attend IACUC reviews and Animal Services/Research Facility meetings with R&D.
• Maintain current knowledge of diseases and disease prevention practices for companion animals and livestock species.
• Ensure that all animal areas conform to company safety and bio-safety standards.

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with a current US license and the ability to achieve full veterinary licensure in Nebraska.
• Category II USDA Accreditation or the ability to obtain shortly after Nebraska licensure.
• Strong clinical experience preferred (including research and private practice); minimum of 1 year clinical experience; experience with companion animals preferred; experience with pocket pet or lab animal species is a plus.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience leading in a team-based environment.
• Knowledge of governmental regulations, including USDA licensure and the Animal Welfare Act.
• Ability to handle, examine, and treat laboratory animals of all species.

• Experience managing performance and career development of direct reports.
• Knowledge in lab animal medicine.
• Knowledge of canine, feline, and poultry species.

• Periodic weekend and holidays on-call required.
• Physically capable of handling, examining, and treating animals of all species.
