Position Summary

The Extended Recovery RN is responsible for providing high-quality patient-centered care to post-operative orthopedic patients requiring extended recovery or overnight care. This role involves monitoring patient conditions, managing pain, preventing complications, encouraging early mobility, preparing patients for discharge home, and ensuring a safe recovery process. The Extended Recovery nurse works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, nurse navigators, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes and maintain safety standards.

Schedule:

Three (3) 12‑hour shifts per week, 6:45 a.m. – 7:15 p.m. + built‑in weekend and holiday rotation.

Position Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school/college of nursing required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Licensure: Registered Nursing licensed in the State of Nebraska or eligible compact state required.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) to be acquired within 90 days of hire or transfer date required.
  • Experience: 1+ years of RN experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of post‑operative orthopedic care, including pain management and mobility assistance.
  • Proficiency in IV therapy, wound care, patient assessment, and vital sign monitoring.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to complications including respiratory distress and infection.
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation of patient assessments and interventions.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Essential Job Functions
  • Patient Care and Monitoring
    • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments post‑surgery.
    • Monitor vital signs, pain levels, and overall patient condition.
    • Administer medications including pain management protocols.
    • Assist patients with mobility ensuring safety and adherence to post‑op restrictions.
  • Clinical Support and Emergency Response
    • Identify signs of post‑operative complications and intervene appropriately.
    • Provide wound care, monitor for infections, and manage post‑anesthesia side effects.
    • Initiate action to correct, prevent, or minimize risks (e.g., falls, needle sticks, patient concerns).
  • Communication and Documentation
    • Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
    • Communicate effectively with patients and families, addressing concerns and providing education about recovery expectations.
  • Operational Responsibilities
    • Maintain professional behavior, attitudes, demeanor, and interactions across departments to achieve the organization's mission of providing efficient, high‑quality patient‑centered care.
    • Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission.
    • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Follow established guidelines as stated in hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Assist in onboarding and training new nursing staff.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned for which competency has been demonstrated.
Physical Requirements

This position is classified as Medium Work. The job requires the exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
