A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) trained to provide comprehensive mental health care across the lifespan. PMHNPs deliver outpatient psychiatric services, focusing on accessible, continuous, and patient‑centered care.
Essential Job Functions- Helps patients by evaluating medical and psychosocial conditions.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of psychotropic medications.
- Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
- Evaluates patients by interviewing patients, families, and other persons, conducting physical examinations, and reviewing medical histories and related documents.
- Designs treatment plans based on cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders.
- Provides psychotherapy, medication management, and staff supervision.
- Collaborates with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
- Enforces policies and standards, participates in utilization reviews, and is available for emergency consultations.
- Provides staff training on psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
- Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events.
- Implements continuing medical education and reads professional organization literature.
- Accepts ownership of new requests and explores opportunities to add value.
- Knowledge of biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social behavioral sciences applied to patient care.
- Practice‑Based Learning and Improvement skills for evaluating patient care and applying scientific evidence.
- Computer skills: EHR, Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Priority management and independent work skills.
- Professional demeanor with patients, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Data entry and record maintenance skills.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Team collaboration skills.
- Representation of the company.
Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing, licensed as an APRN in Nebraska, board certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHN‑P), DEA license, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Working Conditions And Physical Effort- Frequent sitting, standing, and computer work; can vary position or activity for comfort.
- Stand 30% or more of an 8‑hour workday.
- Sit 45% of an 8‑hour workday.
- Walk 25% of an 8‑hour workday.
- Lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Bend, squat, kneel, reach above shoulder level, and twist occasionally.
- Repetitive hand use: simple grasping, fine manipulation, computer use.
- All sensory skills corrected to near normal range.
