Watch Our Story:

Our Waste Market Sector seeks a candidate who will lead the development and implementation of business strategies for the Nebraska/Iowa Waste Market Sector in coordination with local operational leadership and the Waste Market Sector global leadership. This role reports to the Nebraska/Iowa Resources Business Group Manager and coordinates with the Waste Sector Director to advance the waste practice across service lines.

The focus includes MSW and CCR landfill services, while supporting a wide range of waste facilities, landfills, resource management and planning projects across North America. Knowledge or experience with transfer stations, convenience centers, landfills, waste infrastructure and sustainability initiatives is preferred, as is interest in new diversion programs emphasizing sustainable materials management, policy and disposal practices. A proactive understanding of industry trends will distinguish candidates.

You should be comfortable working both in a team and independently, developing strong relationships and speaking to groups of people.

Responsibilities

In the role of Area Market Sector Leader, you will:

  • Lead the waste market sector by developing the business through strategic initiatives, writing proposals, managing projects, and building staff.
  • Contribute to long-range waste management strategic plans for municipalities, including waste infrastructure development, disposal technologies, and operational support.
  • Support engineering and approval processes for a range of waste management facilities throughout North America.
  • Develop and expand the Nebraska/Iowa program while supporting and collaborating across regions and lines to advance waste market sector strategies.
  • Focus on client development, networking and establishing client relationships, developing leads, and strategic thinking for future directions.
  • Incorporate strategic communications and engagement with multiple stakeholders for projects.

Additional activities include the following:

  • Participate in strategic and tactical planning to develop strategic positioning within Nebraska/Iowa in collaboration with Local Operational Leadership, Waste Sector Leadership and Business Development Leads.
  • Assess marketplace opportunities and HDR prospects, and develop prioritized client targets.
  • Lead and participate in direct project pursuits including client relationship development, premarketing, qualifications, proposals, interview content, scopes of work, project budgets and contractor negotiations.
  • Manage day-to-day activities and support professional development of staff.
  • Manage financial performance of the Solid Waste Sector, including profitability, revenue, direct labor and receivables.
  • Implement, monitor, and champion company policies.
  • Participate in project teams in Project Manager roles and contribute toward achieving utilization goals.
  • Serve as client manager for key clients in the area.
  • Participate in industry associations and community organizations to elevate HDR’s brand in target markets.
  • Identify key investments (talent, acquisitions, and technology) to improve industry leadership position.
  • Provide leadership and management for Area Waste Sector staff.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

You should expect to be leading and coordinating projects in Nebraska/Iowa and the Central Region, collaborating with staff in various offices or strategic partners. As part of a larger Waste team, opportunities to work on similar, new and exciting projects across HDR’s network are available.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PE License
  • Prior staff management and development experience
  • Participation in professional organizations in Nebraska/Iowa
  • Ability to travel to meet with staff in Nebraska and Iowa offices and clients in the region
  • Knowledge of current trends in waste management
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations
  • Demonstrated research, analysis and interpretation skills for problem solving
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
