Essential Functions- Clinical Responsibilities
- Obtains and interprets detailed medical, developmental, and family histories
- Participates in patient encounters, provides genetic counseling to families and care providers
- Formally documents patient encounters and test results in the electronic medical record according to institutional standards and provides summaries to patients after counseling sessions in an understandable and supportive manner
- Assists with choosing, consenting, and arranging genetic testing logistics, including ordering, insurance pre-authorization, and result disclosure to provide the most efficient and cost-effective care
- Collaborates closely with geneticists, specialists, and other team members to ensure comprehensive care
- Participates in inpatient consultations, specialty clinic appointments, and multidisciplinary/specialty case reviews as needed
- Independently, or in consultation with a physician, responds to calls and inquiries
- Education and Advocacy
- Educates patients, families, and healthcare providers about genetic conditions, inheritance testing, and available resources
- Provides training and mentorship to the public and to internal students and healthcare professionals
- Responsible for participating in and organizing professional training
- Uses research, continuing education, genetic conferences, and collaboration with colleagues to stay current on genetic disorders
- Program and Administrative Support
- Contribute to development and growth of the hospital’s genetic counseling services and workflows
- Participate in quality improvement, policy development, and outcomes tracking initiatives
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, documentation, and billing requirements
- Master's Degree Candidates must have a master’s degree from an ACGC-accredited program – Required
- 1-3 years experience as a genetic counselor, preferably in pediatric clinical setting – Preferred
- Strong communication, organizational, documentation, and interpersonal skills
- Proficient computer skills
- Team orientated profession with ability to work independently
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Health Services/ABGC - American Board of Genetic Counseling Board-certified or board-eligible through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Upon Hire – Required
- State licensure as a Genetic Counselor in Nebraska within 2 Years – Required
