Research Assistant I-Child Auditory Technology Laboratory
Candidate to work in the Child Auditory Technology (CAT) Lab, focusing on developmental outcomes of children with hearing loss and various hearing technologies.
The CAT Lab studies how to better identify factors that help children thrive and how to make improved clinical recommendations for children and families. Children participate in audiology- and speech-language pathology-like activities such as hearing tests, speech recognition tasks, hearing aid and cochlear implant measurements, and language assessments.
Major Responsibilities & Duties- Assist in the preparation of stimuli and development of appropriate test procedures.
- Assist in research tool preparation, data collection, and procedures in research studies, including work with animal or human subjects.
- Comply with established safety procedures and maintain required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions and results.
- Adhere to lab safety standards.
- Maintain detailed records of test conditions and results.
- Assist in the calibration, maintenance, and cleaning of laboratory equipment and workspace.
- Assist in data collection and data analysis and report findings and project outcomes to the principal investigator and involved staff.
- Assist in design, construction, and maintenance of electronic devices used in laboratories, including PCs, audio equipment, and special purpose interfaces.
- Assist in recruitment, scheduling, and testing in research studies using human subjects.
- Use computers to analyze and plot results of experiments.
- Apply knowledge gained through coursework in psychology, speech and hearing, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and/or computer science.
- Operate and calibrate lab equipment and other electronic devices.
- Operate a personal computer and audio equipment.
- Apply math aptitude for data analyses and generating results.
- Communicate well, both orally and in writing.
- Work directly with laboratory staff and principal investigators.
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills, close attention to detail, math aptitude, independent analytical thinking, organizational skills, and flexibility in duties performed.
- Participate in continuing education programs regarding laboratory safety practices.
- High school diploma required.
- Minimum of one year of college coursework or equivalent experience required.
- Bilingual skills may be required based on area of assignment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of transfer or hire if employed in the Cognitive Neuroscience department.
- Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification required within 30 days of transfer or hire.
- Coursework emphasizing psychology, speech and hearing, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, or a research-related area.
