A Brief Overview

Facilitates quality patient care performing ultrasound exams and related functions as requested. Renders appropriate care specific to age of the patient to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment, as outlined in the "Age of Specific Criteria".

Essential Functions

  • Room preparation to include supplies, equipment set‑up, immobilization devices; isolation procedure requirements; and sterile technique if warranted.
  • Patient/Parent education to allay apprehension and elicit cooperation during the exam. Obtain clinical history of patient’s condition.
  • Calculate and select proper technical factors and probes based on patient’s age, physical condition and suspected pathology.
  • Process sonographic images and evaluate them for technical quality.
  • Prepare films for interpretation by the radiologist, record pertinent patient data and pull previous exams. Maintain department log of exams performed for teaching file purposes.
  • Educate the patient and family regarding the examination process.
  • Provide caring responses to family questions.
  • Excel in service excellence from the patient and family’s perspective.

Performs a variety of functions in support of the department to enhance the overall experience for patients and families.

  • Perform professional, clinical instruction of students by performing and monitoring "on‑the‑job training" as outlined by JRCERT.
  • Keep current regarding developments, trends, and techniques in ultrasound procedures and equipment, as necessary to maintain expertise, through appropriate journals, conferences and seminars. Attend department meetings.
  • Maintain proper functioning of equipment by scanning the acoustic test phantom monthly, scheduling PMs quarterly, and requesting service as needed to keep downtime to a minimum.
  • Transport patients to and from the department to facilitate timely completion of patient exams as needed, in accordance with established department procedure.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion in order to comply with infection control regulations and to present a professional look to patients and families by disinfecting room and probes after each patient use; restocking supplies if necessary, and practicing good hand washing.
  • Perform clerical tasks maintaining continuity of patient exams by retrieving and filing films and reports, answering phones and relaying messages, etc.

Education Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited AMA approved school of sonography required. Candidates may be considered if within 6 months of graduating.

Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrates the analytical abilities necessary to resolve technical problems to produce optimal scans.
  • Exhibits interpersonal skills necessary to counsel and comfort patients and families regarding procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must be A.R.D.M.S. or board eligible, and pass the registry within 1 year.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association required.
  • Additional certification in Abdomen preferred.
  • Additional certification in Vascular preferred.
