Mon – Fri, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, occasional weekends

The Assistant Director of Upward Bound Math and Science is a full‑time, 12‑month, grant‑funded position focusing on student success, persistence, graduation, post‑secondary enrollment, and participant enrichment. The assistant director assists with the management, administration, and implementation of the objectives of NMC’s Upward Bound Math and Science project, including hiring and supervising full‑time and summer staff, developing curriculum aligned with program goals, ensuring effective student programming, and collaborating with target high schools to meet student needs.

The role works with the Director of Upward Bound Programs on policy, procedure, planning, decision making, and data collection and assessment, while staying current with grant regulations and opportunities.

Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
  • Resource Management:
    Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to participants; assist with hiring, training, and supervising professional staff; promote staff development; resolve issues; manage portions of the participant support budget.
Student Support
  • Assist with parent meetings, student advising/coaching, and other support tasks.
  • Work closely with participants in seminar and one‑on‑one formats on pre‑college tasks, including Individual Learning Plans.
  • Coordinate pre‑college programming such as financial aid assistance, college application and scholarship preparation, and enrollment processes.
Program Development and Support
  • Assist in developing curriculum and overseeing all academic year and summer component programming.
  • Lead innovative strategies and initiatives that promote academic standing, retention, graduation, and enrollment of participants.
Leadership
  • Serve as a visible, influential leader by building positive relationships with target schools, campus community, local businesses, and constituents.
  • Advocate for resources by demonstrating effective outcomes for underrepresented students.
Program Assessment and Evaluation
  • Conduct formative and substantive program assessment to assure effective operation.
  • Adhere to federal legislation and relevant regulatory requirements for Upward Bound Math and Science TRIO grants.
  • Oversee alumni tracking and student data management.
Student Recruiting
  • Develop and execute strategies for recruiting eligible students at target high school to meet annual program needs.

Job Requirements
Education
  • Master’s degree in a related field with 1 year progressively responsible professional experience required.
  • Or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 2–3 years progressively responsible professional experience required.
  • Experience administering comprehensive academic support programs for underrepresented student populations may be considered in lieu of a master’s degree.
Experience
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of historically underrepresented students.
  • Prior experience in program administration, supervising staff, and financial management preferred.
  • Experience making effective public presentations to varied audiences preferred.
  • Prior experience writing and managing grants and budgeting for programs preferred.
  • Prior TRIO experience preferred.
