The Residential Construction Carpenter reports to the Senior Construction Supervisor. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha’s (HFHO) Construction team is primarily responsible for completing three phases of new home building:
1) framing,
2) installation of exterior siding, storm doors and porch railings; and building decks, and
3) installation of interior doors, trim and cabinets. This position may be entry‑level or experienced, receiving on-the-job training for the entry level and independent work for experienced carpenters. Each level receives instruction from the Senior Construction Supervisor and gains exposure in one or more areas of HFHO’s construction program. The carpenter will be assigned to one primary construction team but may assist other teams as needed.

- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Complete tasks successfully that are assigned by Senior Construction Supervisor and experienced team members within allotted time‑period.
- Learn to read and work from blueprints, technical manuals, charts and schematics.
- Develop skills to safely operate and maintain a variety of construction tools.
- Responsible use of equipment, tools, supplies and materials to remain within project and team budget.
- Acquire understanding of project management application and record completed work at the end of each day.
- Show up to work on time and be prepared for the day.
- Maintain good communication and cooperative relationships with all other HFHO staff, departments, project teams and contractors.
- View your HFHO email account at least once per day.
- Complete other tasks as assigned.
- Observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
- Complete OSHA 10 certification within one year of employment start date.
- Complete First Aid/CPR training within six months of employment start date.
- Maintain project safety in accordance with HFHO Safety Policy and OSHA Standards.
- Ensure volunteer compliance with the project and site safety plan.
- Ensure contractors, vendors, material providers and visitors comply with HFHO safety practices and OSHA Standards.
- In the event of an accident, determine if it is an emergency and take the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the individual, i.e., dial 911 if necessary and fill out an accident form in all cases.
- Provide work assignments and instruction for volunteers under the direction of site supervisor.
- Ensure that volunteers and family partners have a fulfilling experience.
- Assist with the construction of each project in accordance with the HFHO plans, specifications, current edition of the IRC, and accepted industry standards of practice.
- Maintain and protect all tools, equipment and materials.
- Return tools to assigned vehicle or proper storage location at the end of each day.
- Maintain a clean and organized jobsite and vehicle.
- Ensure quality work per HFHO’s standards.
- Practice good stewardship with HFHO’s resources.
- Maintain assigned vehicle in good working order. Coordinate any service needed with the Construction Maintenance Supervisor.
- Assist Senior Construction Supervisor and rest of construction team to meet the project schedule.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- To be successful, an individual must be able to perform each previously stated duty satisfactorily. The requirements and expectations listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary to succeed as a Residential Construction Carpenter.
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous or current enrollment in construction education or training program preferred.
- Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, safety practices and equipment used in the homebuilding trade is preferred.
- Individual must be a good communicator.
- Strong team skills are essential.
- Must be able to read a tape measure, level and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Proficiency in basic mathematics and conversion of measurements is required.
- Computer literacy is necessary.
