The Department of Ecology is hiring Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions. WCC is an environmental service program within the Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) Program. This is a project position funded until June 30, 2027
.
Location:
MULTIPLE LOCATIONS (Central / Eastern region, including Chelan, Kittitas, Spokane, Walla Walla, Grant, and Yakima counties). This posting is open continuous and will be used to fill vacancies in the region as they arise.
Schedule:
In-person, field work required (not eligible for telework). Typical schedule is 40 hours/week, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am–5:30 pm. Travel may occur and could require a travel schedule such as Thursday through Thursday, 10-hour days with six days off prior. Some projects may require overnight travel.
Crew supervision: supervise and mentor a crew of five WCC members in natural resource assignments. Lead work on multiple project types as assigned.
Project leadership: track and manage conservation projects; monitor use of materials, tools, and equipment; communicate progress with project sponsor and WCC staff; and assign tasks to crew members.
Performance and development: recruit, interview, and select new crew members; review, plan, and assign work; evaluate performance; provide feedback and set professional growth expectations; document performance issues and recommend disciplinary action when needed.
Administrative responsibilities: complete timesheets, travel logs, credit card logs/receipts, safety reports, production reports, and other administrative forms; conduct member evaluations.
Equipment and vehicles: ensure safe use and maintenance of equipment (e.g., small power tools and hand tools); drive and maintain state-owned/leased vehicles (typically four-wheel drive pickups).
Safety: manage safety, well-being, and inclusion of all crew members; enforce safety standards across projects.
Habitat Enhancement: riparian restoration, noxious weed control, in-stream salmon recovery, etc.
Recreational Enhancement: campground upgrades, trail construction/maintenance, boardwalks, etc.
Spike travel: crews may travel statewide for restoration and recreation projects; food and lodging provided while traveling; spike time may be 25–75% of project time depending on crew/season.
WCC is a disaster response program; supervisors may lead deployments to local and national disasters.
Required Qualifications:
Three (3) years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, young adult mentorship, or leadership (e.g., outdoor leadership or experiential education, crew lead, coordinating field activities).
OR
Satisfactory completion of a two-year Forest Technology Vocational Program and one (1) year of field experience as a WCC crew member or related work including emergency response to natural disasters, hazardous spills, firefighting, and/or habitat restoration.
OR
An Associate's degree in Environmental Science or Studies, Forestry, or closely related field, and one (1) year of field experience as a WCC crew member or related work.
Qualifying military experience can substitute, year for year, for field experience.
Special Requirements /ConditionsMust possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Background check will be conducted prior to new hires; information will be considered in determining suitability.
Experience in supervision and training of employees, natural resource conservation and maintenance work; use of various hand and power tools.
Field skill certifications:
Wilderness First Aid, Pesticide Operators License, Wildland Firefighter Red Card.FEMA Disaster Response Training (ICS 300) and IS-700.
