Overview

The WA State Office of the Attorney General has an opening in the Solicitor General's Office for a Deputy Solicitor General. This position will be located in Olympia or downtown Seattle depending on the needs and interests of the person hired to fill this role.

The Solicitor General's Office (SGO) is the division within the AGO responsible for United States Supreme Court practice, appellate assistance programs, coordinating amicus briefs, preparing Attorney General Opinions, writing ballot measure materials, coordinating statewide legal issues, coordinating certain litigation involving the federal government, and at times directly representing the State in significant matters.

The Solicitor General’s Office consists of an outstanding group of twelve attorneys and six professional staff. The members of the Division are good-humored, collaborative, and hard-working. Every member is invested in the success of the other team members. Accordingly, this Division, like the rest of the AGO, enjoys a collegial, inclusive, and respectful working environment in which every person is committed to providing exceptional legal services.

The attorney selected for this position will independently handle select litigation and appeals (including briefing and oral argument) in state and federal courts; assist attorneys throughout the AGO with their appeals, including developing strategy, editing briefs, and coaching for oral argument; provide legal advice on a broad array of legal issues of statewide importance; draft state and federal amicus briefs; and prepare and review Attorney General Opinions and ballot measure materials.

In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as a Deputy Solicitor General, candidates should possess:

  • Excellent analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • An affinity for working in an atmosphere where collaboration and teamwork are valued priorities
  • A demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, experience levels, and communication styles
  • An interest in mentoring others, including providing constructive feedback

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) The AGO seeks applicants who are committed to public service as demonstrated by an applicant's background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice.

The AGO greatly encourages, celebrates and values diversity, appreciating that a workforce composed of those from different backgrounds and experiences creates an inclusive environment, strengthens positive relationships with the local community and brings new perspectives and approaches to fulfill its mission of providing excellent, independent and ethical legal services to the State of Washington and protecting the rights of its people.

This Deputy Solicitor General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. Deputy SG salaries are set between $90,444 and $169,392. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA. The salary of an employee whose official duty station is Seattle would reflect an additional 5% King County Assignment Pay per legislative action.

A competitive state benefits package is also offered which includes a choice of medical/dental insurance plans, retirement, life and basic long-term disability insurance. In addition, there are non-financial benefits that include working in a collaborative and supportive work environment where professional development and work-life balance are highly valued. The health, safety and professional satisfaction of all AGO staff and volunteers is critical to fulfilling the mission of the AGO to provide exceptional legal services.

Complementing and fostering this goal is a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, as evidenced in the AGO's environmental policies.
