The Managing Assistant Attorney General 1 position in the Environmental Protection Division supervises a growing environmental criminal enforcement program. The office is located in downtown Seattle, WA, with flexibility for telecommuting and occasional travel.

- Direct and assist in investigations and case development.
- Develop creative litigation strategies for complex legal issues.
- Negotiate with defense counsel on potential plea agreements.
- Draft pleadings, motions, and memoranda from initial filing through post‑judgment proceedings.
- Conduct all aspects of discovery.
- Appearing at pre‑trial hearings, trying cases to jury or bench, and participating in post‑trial proceedings including appeals.
- Develop and foster working relationships with local, state, and federal partners.
- Represent the AGO in public settings on sensitive or high‑profile matters.
Additional managing responsibilities include:
- Supervising environmental criminal prosecution and investigation.
- Mentoring and coaching attorneys and investigators.
- Listening and communicating effectively internally and externally.
- Managing and evaluating the performance of attorneys and investigators.
- Actively participating in division leadership.
- Developing and implementing operational processes.
In addition to meeting the qualifications to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the preferred candidate will have:
- Seven or more years of criminal prosecution experience (ten or more are preferred).
- Three or more years of experience in environmental or complex criminal enforcement.
- Experience directing environmental or complex investigations.
- Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork, collaboration, and a positive work environment.
- Ability to maintain productive relationships across the division, agency, and state stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor attorneys and professional staff.
- Strong analytical, research, organizational, and writing skills.
- Excellent judgment.
- Experience successfully handling multiple time‑sensitive assignments.
- Commitment to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce and culture.
Highly desired qualifications include:
- Ten or more years of complex criminal prosecution experience.
- Familiarity with Washington environmental criminal law.
- Familiarity with district and superior courts in Washington.
- Experience managing a team.
- Experience working with underrepresented or ethnically diverse communities or groups.
- Ability to read, write, or speak a second language.
Attorneys who lack some of the above‑listed experience but have other relevant experience are encouraged to apply. The Division may waive the need for significant litigation experience for attorneys with substantial experience in environmental policy and/or serving traditionally marginalized communities.
