The Patient Care Technician functions as a caregiver for a specific patient population to achieve desired outcomes. The position focuses on expanding knowledge and skills, providing effective direct and indirect care as part of the interdisciplinary team to a variety of complex patients. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, promotes patient satisfaction, comfort, and safety. Assists with a variety of patient, unit and environment‑related tasks, and participates in patient safety initiatives.
A day in the life of a Patient Care Technician at Hackensack Meridian includes:
- Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service
- Provide for effective and safe guest/patients outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues and other members of the health‑care team regarding patient status and rendered care
- Take self‑directed or self‑motivated initiative to do more than is expected or required, acting before being required to by events, improving job performance and/or creating new opportunities
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of our patients’ plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement (PI) activities
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Completion of one of the following:
Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician program;
Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing; HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program; or equivalent medical background experience such as EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, Nursing Assistant. - Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, strong sense of accountability, teamwork focus, dedication to ongoing education, and passion for delivering high‑quality care based on a deep patient focus.
- Experienced or certified in phlebotomy and checking EKG, vital signs and blood sugar
- At least one year PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting, or eligible for the HMH PCT apprentice program
- Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician who has completed a PCT program including phlebotomy, EKG and nursing assistant coursework in both theoretical and clinical settings
Minimum rate of $20.32 hourly. HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate is an estimate of the minimum base pay and does not reflect the full value of the market‑competitive total rewards package.
Job Duties & Compensation DetailsThe starting rate of pay is for informational purposes only. Posted hourly rates may be stated as an annual salary and vice‑versa depending on the level, nature of duties and credentials. Base compensation may differ based on competitive market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity and budget. Some positions may also have performance‑based incentives, bonuses or commissions. Shift differentials may apply for evening, night or weekend shifts.
