POSITION SUMMARY: The job of Para I – Speech was established to assist with the provision of speech and language services to identified students by providing instructional lessons under the direction of the Speech/Language Pathologist in either the special education or general education setting; monitoring student behavior; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and performing clerical tasks as determined by the Speech/Language Pathologist.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides individual or small group instruction in the general or special education classroom under the direction of the Speech/Language Pathologist to help special education students develop speech and language or social skills.
- Aids students in and out of classroom activities (e.g., packing backpacks, note‑taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills) to support speech‑language needs and social growth.
- Assists students requiring support for personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations (e.g., restroom, nutrition) to enable participation in school environments.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., CPR, education strategies, specific disability education) to acquire and convey information relevant to the job functions and meet annual State requirements.
- Collaborates with staff to provide necessary support and information related to the student’s progress as established in their Individual Education Program.
- Implements behavioral plans for students as designed by the IEP team and assists with challenging or aggressive behaviors under certified staff direction.
- Primarily works with the Speech/Language Pathologist’s caseload but may assist other students as needed.
- Assists students and staff in the use of augmentative and alternate communication devices.
- Implements education and behavioral programming under the supervision of certified staff to develop new speech/language or social skills.
- Instructs students in activities (e.g., articulation, phonology, social skills, language skills) to meet Individual Education Program goals.
- Maintains instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability of materials and reliable information regarding student progress.
- Monitors students during assigned periods across various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure effective functioning of the educational team.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Job‑related experience is desired.
- High school diploma or equivalent. If the school building is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks and may need upgrading. Core skills include adherence to safety practices, operating standard office equipment, using district‑approved software, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and applying crisis intervention techniques.
KNOWLEDGE is required for basic math, reading and following instructions, and understanding complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions. Key knowledge areas include instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development/behavior; safe handling of blood‑borne pathogens; and crisis de‑escalation techniques.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collect data, and use job‑related equipment. Flexibility to work with others, handle data, operate equipment methodically, and work with diverse individuals is essential. Problem‑solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
