Job Description

As a Department Manager, you will lead and coordinate all activities within a manufacturing department to ensure safe operations, high-quality output, and strong productivity. This role typically supports a smaller plant environment and directly oversees a team of fewer than 40 hourly employees, as well as a team of Shift Supervisors.

What You Will Do

Lead With Safety

  • Serve as a visible safety leader, placing safety first in all decisions and actions.

  • Partner with the EHS Manager to develop, implement, and sustain policies and programs that support a safe working environment.

  • Ensure investigations for injuries, incidents, and near misses are completed promptly, and that corrective actions are executed effectively.

Drive Operational Excellence

  • Establish, communicate, and enforce safety, quality, waste, and productivity standards aligned with plant goals.

  • Maintain housekeeping and process discipline through adherence to 5S and GMP standards.

  • Ensure Standard Operating Conditions (SOCs) are accurate, current, and followed, enabling consistent productivity and continuous improvement.

Manage Performance & Improvement Systems

  • Oversee the Performance Control System (PCS), including KPI development, shift‑meeting audits, and leading department‑level meetings.

  • Maintain and update action item registers to track exceptions and drive issue resolution.

  • Collaborate with the Plant Steering Committee to identify improvement opportunities, support project execution, and ensure standards reflect updated processes.

Lead & Develop People

  • Supervise and develop a team of salaried Shift Supervisors.

  • Manage all aspects of people leadership including hiring, training, performance management, employee relations, discipline, and recognition.

  • Promote a strong safety‑oriented, high‑performance culture supported by continuous feedback and coaching.

Strengthen Quality & Customer Focus

  • Ensure customer complaints are investigated thoroughly, corrective actions are implemented, and results are communicated effectively to all relevant teams.

  • Maintain quality standards that meet or exceed both customer expectations and company requirements.

Optimize Resources & Support Plant Goals

  • Recommend and justify capital projects with clear needs, ROI, and performance impact.

  • Manage labor, materials, and equipment efficiently to support cost‑effective operations.

  • Deliver results that meet or exceed the plant's business plan, KPI targets, and budget expectations.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • At least 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience.
