Job Description Summary

The Registered Technologist in Radiation Therapy is responsible for delivering prescribed radiation treatments to veterinary oncology patients (dogs/cats) in accordance with established clinical protocols, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines. This role supports radiation oncology services through patient preparation, treatment delivery, equipment operation and maintenance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and educational support of trainees. The technologist plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, compassionate, and safe delivery of radiation therapy in a teaching hospital environment.

Job Description

The Registered Technologist in Radiation Therapy is responsible for delivering prescribed radiation treatments to veterinary oncology patients in accordance with established clinical protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. This role supports the Radiation Oncology service through accurate patient positioning, treatment delivery, equipment operation and quality assurance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and education within a teaching hospital environment. The technologist plays a critical role in ensuring safe, precise, and compassionate radiation therapy services while supporting clinical operations, research activities, and trainee instruction.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Administer prescribed radiation treatments according to physician orders and established treatment protocols
  • Accurately position patients for treatment using immobilization devices and treatment planning parameters
  • Operate linear accelerator (Lin Ac) equipment in compliance with radiation safety standards
  • Maintain accurate documentation of treatment delivery and patient records
  • Assist with sedation and anesthesia support in collaboration with nurse anesthetists
  • Support preparation of immobilization devices and assist with CT and MRI imaging for treatment planning
  • Perform routine quality assurance procedures and maintain treatment and QA equipment
  • Collaborate with medical physicists and equipment service personnel to ensure continued safe operation
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients during admissions, treatment visits, discharge, and follow-up
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of care with Radiology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and other hospital services
  • Support radiation oncology clinic operations, including appointment coordination and consultation requests
  • Participate in clinical research activities, including data collection and maintenance of oncology databases
  • Instruct and support students, interns, residents, and house officers in radiation therapy practices
  • Perform organizational and operational tasks within the treatment vault and control room
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Technologist in Radiation Therapy (RT[T]) with current certification and licensure
  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree and 2 to 4 years of experience
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy principles, equipment operation, and radiation safety practices
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate clinical documentation
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical computer systems
  • Ability to lift and maneuver patients and equipment, including lifting 20 pounds or more on a consistent basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Veterinary or comparative medicine experience (preferred but not required)
  • Willingness to learn basic veterinary patient handling and care skills
