Responsibilities

Performs complex technical assignments requiring theoretical insight and interpretation, exercising a high degree of skill and judgment. Performs basic diagnostic testing and imaging, and works closely with physicians and patients.

Essential Functions
  • Gather necessary information for physician, conduct initial patient screening, and perform diagnostic testing to care for patients’ eye-related problems.
  • Obtain and check ocular history, vital signs, visual acuity, neutralize glasses, automated refractions, pupillary exams, confrontational fields, ocular motility, and intraocular pressure.
  • Perform diagnostic testing including basic color vision screening (Ishihara or HRR plates), automated visual field testing (Humphrey Visual Field), corneal topographies, pachymetry, and specialized visual acuity tests (PAM, LI, BAT). Possess basic contact lens knowledge and ability to insert, remove, and teach lens care.
  • Execute clinical-clerical office duties such as scheduling, request forms, printing results, ordering contact lenses, and performing related administrative activities. Stock rooms according to practice needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of closely related clinical experience or training in optometry, ophthalmology, or a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ocular anatomy and physiology, basic tonometry, and ophthalmic equipment maintenance and simple repairs.
  • Understanding of ocular injuries and urgent care.
  • Basic ocular pharmacology knowledge of drops and medications used for eye examinations, including proper administration, dosage, duration, side effects, and hospital medication shelf-life policy.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) upon hire (preferred).
  • Certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology or another nationally recognized professional certifying body upon hire (preferred).
