Financial Counselor at Cleveland Area Healthcare System
Under the direction of the Revenue Cycle Specialist, the employee in this position is responsible for advising patients of their financial responsibility. The Financial Counselor will meet with patients who walk in or call to advise them of payment options, collect payments, explain the hospital’s Charity Policy if eligible, and assist them with completing applications for assistance if necessary. Works closely with Business Office Manager and staff.
PrincipalJob Duties and Responsibilities
- Daily financial review of all Self‑Pay accounts.
- Identify and assist patients that may need additional financial counseling including Charity Care, Medicaid/Sooner Care, Insure Oklahoma, in‑house payment arrangements, and Help Financial payment arrangements.
- Assist patients with completing Financial Aid Program (FAP) applications, review for completion, and submit to committee.
- Collect patient payments and apply discounts when appropriate.
- Handle customer calls and walk‑in questions and complaints regarding billing and collections.
- Work closely with Access Department for outpatient service estimates and payments to provide Good Faith Estimates when required.
- Liaison between patient and insurance companies for walk‑in patient concerns.
- Accurately document all financial counseling correspondence in patient accounts.
- Assist with answering phones.
- Prepare Patient Access Department daily deposit.
- Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Always represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Complete continued education/training requirements.
- Always maintain patient confidentiality.
- Adhere to all HR and hospital policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.

RequirementsEducational/Skills Required
High School diploma required. Prefer experience in accounting, financial counseling, and business environments. The employee must possess excellent communication skills and organizational skills to communicate with patients, physicians, and staff.
Experience Required
One (1) year experience in a healthcare business office environment, either hospital or physician’s office preferred.
Responsibility for Confidential Information
This position could have access to patient confidential records and must comply with HIPAA regulations as well as compliance policies.
Supervisory Experience
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Working Conditions
Primarily sitting, sometimes standing. Utilizes good hearing, vocal and visual skills. Occasionally requires walking, bending or stretching. Equipment, boxes, materials, or supplies of light weight (under 50 lbs) may require infrequent lifting, pushing, or pulling. The incumbent works under good conditions in a clean environment and may be exposed to communicable diseases.
