Positions in this family perform routine professional social service and law enforcement duties in the areas of assessment of criminogenic need, transition plan design, treatment referral and ongoing monitoring of offender behavior. Supervision services are provided in the community for probationers, parolees and inmates in re‑entry programs to increase public safety through the reduction of future criminal behavior.
Typical Functions- Manages a caseload of adult probationers using motivational interviewing to assess criminogenic risk/need, determine the offender’s stage of change, refer to appropriate treatment or programs, and monitor adherence to action steps and conditions.
- Conducts investigations including home visits, pre‑sentence, interstate, pre‑pardon, and pre‑parole.
- Prepares reports concerning offender activities, violations, court reports, and provides recommendations to the releasing authority.
- Maintains documentation in physical or electronic format regarding caseload management.
- Monitors payment of financial obligations mandated by the releasing authority.
- Assists in security operations during prison disturbances; arrests and transports offenders; assists with out‑of‑state transfers and other agency requirements.
- Conducts periodic drug and alcohol screenings of offenders.
- Assists probationers with compliance to the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Registration Act and Sex Offender Registration, if applicable.
This is the basic level where incumbents perform entry‑level duties involved in the supervision of probationers, parolees, and inmates in re‑entry programs.
Level IIThis is the career level where incumbents perform a variety of professional probation and parole duties at full performance level and may provide training and guidance to others in routine assignments.
Level IIIThis is the specialist level where incumbents serve as a subject matter expert in an evidence‑based practice area such as motivational interviewing, assessment, or transition planning; provide direct programming to offenders; and supervise offenders with complex behavioral issues.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Level IKnowledge of laws, regulations, evidence‑based practices, community resources, public and private re‑entry services, report writing, basic investigation, basic law enforcement, counseling and motivational interviewing, and substance testing/collection. Ability to build effective relationships with communities and service agencies; locate employment for offenders; motivate change; manage large caseloads; give courtroom testimony; communicate orally and in writing; apply evidence‑based practices; and use electronic technology for offender management.
LevelII
Same as Level I, with additional ability to provide oversight and guidance to other staff.
Level IIISame as Level I and II, with expertise in a specific evidence‑based practice area; ability to provide training, mentoring, and oversight to others.
Education And Experience Level IStatutory requirements of 57 O.S. 515:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, including at least 24 semester hours in psychology, sociology, social work, criminology, education, criminal justice administration, penology, or police science.
Statutory requirements of 57 O.S. 515:
Bachelor’s degree as above plus two years of correctional experience in social casework (classification, assessment, field supervision of probationers and parolees and/or inmates), or a master’s degree with one year of required work experience.
