The Engineering Technician supports the design, drafting, configuration, and documentation of substation relaying and metering systems. Working under supervision, this role assists in equipment layouts, materials specifications, SCADA and communications configuration, and compliance documentation to help ensure safe, reliable, standards-based electric system performance.
Responsibilities- Support the design, drafting, configuration, and documentation of substation relaying and metering systems in the Relay Protection & Controls Department.
- Assist with relaying and metering design for new substations and modifications to existing systems.
- Help develop material lists, procurement specifications, and contract documents.
- Create accurate relaying and metering drawings, schematics, specifications, SEL relay logic, SCADA point lists, and communications processor configurations.
- Support departmental drafting needs in accordance with KAMO drafting standards.
- Conduct on-site visits to new and existing substations for checkout, inspections, and technical support.
- Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electronics Technology (required).
- 2–4 years of relay and metering experience required.
- General knowledge of substation relaying and metering design principles.
- Familiarity with relay event analysis, SCADA point list development, system protection theory, and protection equipment testing.
- Working knowledge of substation components including protective relays, revenue meters, communications processors, power transformers, PTs, CTs, circuit breakers, switchers, capacitor banks, wave traps, reactors, transmission lines.
- General understanding of AutoCAD, SEL software, SEL relays, and SEL RTAC processors.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing conditions.
- Valid driver’s license (must be maintained).
- Ability to read digital displays and manage deadlines with high concentration.
