Location: Purcell

The Public Safety Dispatcher is a vital member of the City of Purcell’s 911 Communications Center, responsible for receiving, evaluating, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for service. This position provides communications support for multiple agencies, including:

  • Purcell Police Department
  • McClain County Sheriff’s Office
  • Washington Police Department
  • Wadley’s EMS
  • Purcell Fire Department
  • All Rural Fire Departments in McClain County

This position plays a critical role in ensuring public and responder safety through timely and accurate communication and coordination across multiple jurisdictions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Call Taking & Dispatching:
    • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls using a multi-line phone system.
    • Elicit essential information quickly and accurately from callers in high-stress situations.
    • Dispatch appropriate law enforcement, fire, EMS, or other emergency personnel using radio, CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch), and other communication systems.
    • Prioritize calls based on urgency and available resources.
  • Monitor and operate multiple public safety radio frequencies.
  • Maintain constant communication with field units to provide support, information, and updates.
  • Relay critical information between agencies during multi-jurisdictional incidents.
  • Records & Data Entry:
    • Input and retrieve information from local, state, and national databases including NCIC/OLETS.
    • Document and maintain accurate records of all calls and dispatched units within CAD.
    • Log officer-initiated activities such as traffic stops and warrant checks.
  • Multi-Agency Coordination:
    • Communicate and collaborate with external agencies and jurisdictions during emergencies.
    • Maintain knowledge of jurisdictional boundaries, response protocols, and agency-specific procedures.
  • Emergency Protocols:
    • Provide pre-arrival instructions for medical emergencies as trained.
    • Initiate emergency notifications and coordinate mutual aid when needed.
    • Maintain composure during high-pressure incidents including natural disasters, active crimes, and critical accidents.
  • Customer Service:
    • Treat callers and personnel with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
    • Provide non-emergency assistance, directions, or referrals to the public.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of emergency dispatch procedures and protocols.
  • Working knowledge of local geography, including roadways and jurisdictional areas.
  • Proficiency in using CAD, radio systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective during high-stress, life-threatening situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload efficiently.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and comply with all applicable laws and policies.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and adapt to evolving procedures and technologies.

Working Conditions:

  • 24/7 operation, including holidays and weekends – shift work required.
  • Sedentary office work in a secure communications center.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, wearing a headset, and viewing computer screens.
  • High noise levels due to radios and telephone activity.
  • Exposure to graphic, distressing, or emotionally charged situations via audio.

Work Schedule:

  • Full-time with shift rotations including day, evening, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Overtime or emergency call-ins may be required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
