Crane Service Technician – Mazzella Companies

The Overhead Service Technician is a front‑line employee with direct customer contact and is a valued, essential part of the company’s success; in addition to technical skills, people skills are vital for effective customer relationship management and decision‑making.

Responsibilities
  • Perform on‑site repairs on overhead cranes and hoists at customers’ facilities as directed by the Service Supervisor or Service Manager.
  • Perform planned maintenance and repairs on all types of crane and hoist systems.
  • Respond to emergency breakdown call‑outs, including after‑hours and weekend availability.
  • Conduct extensive on‑site electrical, electronic, mechanical, and structural troubleshooting to determine root causes and establish necessary repairs using visual inspections and testing equipment.
  • Maintain a basic understanding of OSHA, ANSI, CMAA, and other regulatory codes applicable to crane service.
  • Apply proficient knowledge of electrical theory for power and controls, mechanical systems of cranes/hoists, and simple structural elements.
  • Complete daily paperwork accurately, including time tickets, service reports, inspection reports, expense reports, and sales lead generation forms.
  • Review completed repairs with customers and obtain signatures on daily service reports confirming acceptance.
  • Maintain all company equipment and tools in compliance with manufacturer recommendations and certifications.
  • Keep the service vehicle stocked with inventory, line stock items, and required forms and literature.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and image at all times.
  • Communicate regularly with the local office, calling the supervisor at least once per day.
  • Promote excellent customer relationships through strong interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain Quality Assurance Standards.
  • Compile information for replacement and repair proposals and forward to the Service Supervisor or Service Manager.
  • Keep training assignments current.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education

A high school diploma, vocational‑technical school or crane training program, trade school, equivalent military experience, or technical college training program (preferred).

Experience and Skills
  • At least 2 years in an industrial maintenance environment or equivalent military experience; the equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Industrial HVAC controls and automation experience.
  • Previous overhead crane service experience preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to stay educated in the crane industry; service technicians must be computer literate and technologically savvy.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing that meets company requirements.
  • Heavy lifting/pulling capability (minimum 75 lbs.) and ability to work at heights greater than six feet.
  • Standard schedule of 40 hours per week with ability to work varied hours, overtime and on‑call as required.
  • Minimal travel required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and planning skills.
  • Excellent math skills and PC literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and disciplined with ability to multitask.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check, physical, drug screening, and e‑Verify.
