Position SummaryPerforms mechanical repair on all school district owned support vehicles, school buses, and motorized mobile equipment. Positions in this classification perform vehicle repairs at a journeyman-level on an assigned shift. Incumbent works directly for the shift lead mechanic. Work is generally reviewed upon completion for quality assurance.
Essential Duties- Inspects motorized equipment, such as automobiles, school buses, mowers, tractors.
- Diagnoses and determines extent of necessary repairs.
- Overhauls, repairs and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches.
- Inspects, cleans, repairs and replaces components of gas, diesel, including carburetors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, tanks and gauges.
- Repairs and replaces such components as alternators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.
- Adjusts and replaces brakes.
- Overhauls hydraulic, power steering, booster and vacuum systems.
- Removes and installs radiators, water pumps, hoses and cooling fans.
- Operates motorized equipment in connection with repair and servicing.
- Records repairs on shop work orders.
- Performs preventive and special interest maintenance as prescribed by manufacturers specifications or garage services operating instructions.
- Adheres to all established safety policies and standards to include the identification, use, and proper procedures for handling or disposal of hazardous wastes.
- Reports to supervisor as needed any problems encountered in the assigned work and the progress in completing work assignments.
- Promotes the overall effectiveness of the organization by performing tasks and sharing responsibilities of other members of the Department during peak periods or when there is an overload of duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And/or Abilities Required)- Requires reading, writing, and math skills normally obtained through the completion of a HS Diploma or a GED.
- Five (5) years of journey level working experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and/or school buses and other power-driven equipment diesel engines. Specialized training in auto mechanics and/or vocational training in auto mechanics may be substituted for work experience.
- Knowledge of the use of basic automotive mechanical tools and equipment, such as tire changing and vehicle lubrication equipment.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as defined by the district’s insurance carrier.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment employed in the rebuilding, repair and adjustment of motorized equipment.
- Knowledge of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems and their diagnosis, repair and adjustment.
- Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
- Knowledge of chassis, parts and replacements.
- Knowledge provisions outlined in the Department of Transportation CFR 49, part 393 applying to the safe operation of vehicles and school buses on the highway.
- Appropriate automotive industry safety standards, precautions and procedures associated with a vehicle fleet maintenance operation.
- Basic computer skills.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain an appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
- Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures and equipment applicable to mechanical work being performed.
- Knowledge of mechanical aptitude, ability to read and understand vehicle service and lubrication charts.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Incumbent to be certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in one or all three of the listed certifications:
