We are seeking an Intermediate Chemist to support the Federal Aviation Administration’s Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) Forensic Sciences Section. In this role, you will perform advanced toxicological and forensic chemical analyses of biological specimens in support of FAA investigations and safety determinations. You will work alongside chemists, toxicologists, and laboratory technicians in a highly regulated, accredited laboratory environment where precision, documentation, and scientific integrity are paramount.

RequirementsMinimum/General
Experience:
One (1) year of related professional experience with a Master’s degree;
Four (4) years of related professional experience with a Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a related scientific field from an accredited university.
- Experience working in a forensic toxicology or biomedical laboratory
- Hands-on experience with GC/MS, HPLC/MS, and related analytical instrumentation
- Familiarity with laboratory accreditation standards (ISO, ABFT, or similar)
- Strong analytical, documentation, and data-interpretation skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a multidisciplinary laboratory team
- Experience supporting federally regulated laboratory environments
- Perform complex forensic chemical analyses of biological specimens, including postmortem fluids and tissues, in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Conduct forensic analytical work using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (HPLC/MS), UV/VIS spectrophotometry, and immunoassay techniques
- Record, verify, and maintain complete laboratory notes and analytical records in compliance with laboratory SOPs and quality standards
- Contribute to Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) activities and participate in laboratory accreditation processes
- Develop, validate, and refine forensic analytical procedures to detect and analyze new and emerging drugs
- Perform research related to the evaluation and acquisition of new laboratory instrumentation and equipment
- Maintain chemical and laboratory supply inventories in accordance with laboratory SOPs
- Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment in compliance with ISO and ABFT requirements
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory work area
- Perform statistical analysis and interpretation of laboratory data
- Conduct independent research with minimal supervision to support method development and emerging forensic needs
- Ability to obtain and maintain FAA suitability (Public Trust)
