Location: South Tower

Shift Available: Full-Time, 7A-7P and 7P-7A

5 South Post Ortho/Trauma unit is a 52-bed unit with 9 stepdown beds. We provide care to recently transferred TICU patients, as well as admits from the Trauma ED, PACU, and elective orthopedic cases to include knees, hips, shoulder joint replacements, along with single-system orthopedic elective surgeries. 5 South is a fast-paced environment that requires critical thinking, time-management, and teamwork. We work collaboratively with RNs, LPNs, and techs to provide the highest level of care to our patients.

General Description

An OU Health Registered Nurse (RN) I works under general supervision, providing the highest quality of care to patients in a hospital setting with health problems ranging from simple to complex. Responsibilities
  • Align behaviors with OU Health values and maintain nursing professional practice standards.
  • Assume responsibility for an assigned patient or group of patients.
  • Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments, noting all changes in physician orders.
  • Assist physicians in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments.
  • Obtain and monitor physiological data, observe manifestations, and intervene when necessary.
  • Administer medication as prescribed.
  • Initiate, regulate, and monitor intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Deliver patient care safely and competently.
  • Resolve patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
  • Inform patients and families about hospital procedures, share the care plan during care and at discharge.
  • Make referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Foster a growth mindset through seeking mentorship, remaining open to coaching and feedback, and maintaining professional certification or licensure.
  • Develop a professional career plan and set personal performance goals aligned with enterprise-wide metrics.
  • Foster an inclusive workforce where individual differences are valued and maximized.
  • Delegate tasks to clinical support staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience: 0-3 years of experience in patient care as a Registered Nurse.

License/Certification/Registration
  • Current Registered Nurse License (RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse).
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques.
  • Ability to maintain civility and good working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
  • Skilled in computer applications designed to ensure quality and safety measures for patients.
  • Ability to establish and maintain integrity and trust with patients by advocating in the patient’s best interest.
  • Ability to engage and manage conflicts and disagreements constructively.
  • Ability to maintain compliance accreditation with local, state, and federal regulatory standards.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and maximized.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills characterized by candor, openness, integrity, and diplomacy.
