Maintenance Worker, Juvenile Justice Center

GENERAL
PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the care and maintenance of the Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice Center building and grounds.
- SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the close supervision of the Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice Center’s Building Maintenance Superintendent. - SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None generally. May supervise temporary employees.
- Performs skilled and unskilled interior and exterior building maintenance and repairs such as:
- Plumbing: remove and replace faucets, drains, work on commercial toilets and urinals; cut and sweat pipes and fittings; identify and install pipe fittings, including PVC pipe; operate sewer snake to clean drains.
- Construction: layout and build metal stud walls, install door frames and hang doors; hang sheetrock, mud, tape, and finish sheetrock for painting.
- Mechanical: change filters as required; replace belts, motors, etc.
- Electrical: remove and replace switches, plugs, light bulbs, etc.; trace wires and diagnose basic electrical problems.
- Perform regular maintenance on tools and equipment, including cleaning, storage, and inventory.
- Move building furniture for carpet installation and office moves as needed.
- Perform maintenance of building sidewalks and parking areas, including picking up litter, snow removal, and ice removal.
- Work from ladders and in confined areas with required ventilation; understand and participate in emergency evacuation plans and duties during emergencies (fire, tornado, medical emergency).
- On-call: must be able to respond on site within one hour of a call.
- Yard work and custodial duties as assigned (mowing, edging, trimming, weed pulling, planting, mulching; empty trash, sweep, mop, vacuum, carpet cleaning, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors).

Duties
- Receives consumable goods (paper towels, toilet paper, liquid soap, etc.) and stores items on shelves 68" in height.
- Check packing slips of goods shipped to the Bureau to ensure proper product is delivered per agreed terms.
- Responds to complaints of building occupants as directed by supervisor.
- Performs tasks to control insects and rodents.
- Repairs small machinery.
Minimum Qualifications
- Commercial maintenance experience preferred. Facilities background or construction.
- Education:
High School Diploma. - Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid state driver’s license. Must have a telephone number where the employee can be reached. - Necessary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities. Skill in operation of some listed tools and equipment. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods. Ability to work safely. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions. Ability to work independently. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely. Self-starter with initiative.
Pickup truck, saws, pumps, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, phones, radios, carpet cleaning equipment, floor buffers and all types of yard tools and equipment to include: mowers, edgers, weed eaters, gas hedge trimmer, rakes, hoes, etc. Any hand or electric tools normally associated with the upkeep of a building.
