The Medical Assistant assists assigned Providers with patient examinations, pre‑visit questions, treatments, and procedures as directed by the Provider, while maintaining an efficient flow of patients through the clinic.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Greets and welcomes patients; escorts patients to appropriate location for pre‑examination information gathering.
- Inquires about self‑referrals, recent ER visits or hospitalizations; requests reports and documents all information in EMR.
- Measurings and records patient‑specific information (height, weight, respiration, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, head circumference); accurately records all measurements in EMR.
- Documents patient's chief complaint in EMR.
- Administers medications and injections under provider’s directions and documents in EMR.
- Reviews assigned telephone encounters within EMR in a timely manner.
- Administers immunizations under provider’s direction, including providing VIS and follow‑up; updates OSIIS and patient’s EMR accurately.
- Prepares and restocks supplies in each examination room daily; prepares rooms for subsequent patients.
- Assists providers in physical exams and procedures as directed.
- Participates in training programs to improve patient care; learns and practices evidence‑based practice approaches.
- Addresses the needs of patients and families; considers cultural sensitivity and uses effective communication skills.
- Disposes of contaminated items per Variety Care policy.
- Follows “Universal Precautions”; uses appropriate PPE.
- Follows HIPAA guidelines and Variety Care policies.
- Complies with OSHA recommendations.
- Coordinates with referral clerks and communicates with community organizations, health plans, facilities, specialists to obtain and quickly convey high priority results to provider.
- Assists with emergencies as directed by provider.
- Supports plan of care and patient education per provider’s recommendations.
- Occasionally travels to other Variety Care health centers to provide back‑up coverage; mileage reimbursed per policy.
- Supports Variety Care’s accreditation as a Patient‑Centered Medical Home; contributes to program “Triple Aim”.
- Embodies personal character, ethical conduct, integrity, adaptability, sound judgment; is result‑oriented problem solver.
- Functions as member of assigned emergency code team.
- Familiar with crash car/emergency kit, use and restocking procedure.
- Has general knowledge of Medical Assistant competency‑based orientation checklist.
- Performs other duties as assigned by service line.
- Able to lift at least 25 pounds.
- Able to assist patients onto and off of exam table when asked or directed.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
- Demonstrated proficiency of core competencies within 90 days of employment.
- Must complete CPR course within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to obtain and record accurate information.
- Ability to use or willingness to learn electronic medical records software.
- Intermediate computer skills including data entry and typing.
- Ability to perform tasks, administer medications and injections, and knowledge of instrumentation used in lab point‑of‑care testing within 90 days.
- Effective communication with patient population.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Maintain confidentiality of information per HIPAA and Variety Care policy.
- Previous experience in a medical assistant role.
- Previous clinic experience.
