Overview

Police Dispatcher role at Oklahoma City University. The Police Dispatcher receives incoming calls for police services, dispatches officers as appropriate, and maintains records of communications and activities to support the safety of the campus community.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the department and University.
  • Initiate outgoing and receive incoming telephone communications for the department.
  • Orally communicate campus regulations, rules and policies to members of the campus community and visitors, and to convey vital information to department personnel.
  • Transmit and receive information from Police personnel via two-way radios.
  • Maintain records of all communications to and from Police personnel regarding incidents, field activity, and other pertinent matters.
  • Maintain and accurately tally officers' activity during an assigned shift.
  • Oversee checking in and out of equipment to departmental personnel including maintaining inventory records.
  • Provide administrative support as assigned by supervisors, including data entry and reporting support.
  • Other duties as assigned. Conditions of Employment include: pass a pre-employment criminal background check, obtain and maintain OLETS certification, and complete internal police dispatch training.
Qualifications
  • Two years of dispatching experience in police or campus law enforcement (preferred).
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, and MS Access within a Windows environment.
  • Ability to understand and apply concepts from training programs and procedures manuals, evidenced by successful completion of tests and applying concepts when dispatching.
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with supervisory staff, officers, dispatchers, and support personnel at all levels.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate base unit and hand-held radio equipment and complex telephone/switchboard systems.
  • Typing speed of 35 words per minute and accurate radio log entry by end of each shift.
  • Ability to perform filing tasks and maintain organized records.
  • Ability to compile accurate tallies of field activity using basic math.
  • Ability to pass a written test to become OLETS certified.
  • Ability to multi-task at least three job-related functions.
  • Ability to work as scheduled, including nights, weekends, and additional shifts as needed.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Work is primarily indoors but requires travel between campus buildings and occasional off-campus activity.
  • Department operates 24 hours a day, so nights and weekends are required as scheduled.
  • Exposure to noise from telephones, radios, and office equipment.
