Position Overview
We are seeking a strategic and operationally focused Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead all financial functions of the organization and serve as a key member of the executive leadership team.
This role will drive financial performance, cash flow management, capital strategy, and retail profitability across a multi-location grocery environment. The CFO will partner closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and executive leadership to support business decisions, store performance, and long-term organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities
Executive Financial Leadership
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board on financial performance, capital planning, and business strategy
- Lead long-range financial planning, forecasting, and capital allocation
- Provide financial modeling and scenario analysis for store operations, closures, acquisitions, and investments
- Oversee financial performance across all retail locations, including:
- Store-level P&L performance
- Labor cost management and scheduling efficiency
- Margin, shrink, and inventory performance
- Partner with Operations to improve store profitability and financial accountability
- Develop KPIs and dashboards to support field leadership
- Direct all accounting operations including GL, AP, AR, payroll accounting, and inventory accounting
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
- Lead external financial audits and benefit plan audits (401(k), ESOP, and health & welfare plans)
- Ensure strong internal controls and GAAP compliance
- Manage banking relationships, debt facilities, and lender compliance
- Lead cash flow forecasting and working capital optimization
- Evaluate financing alternatives and capital market strategies
- Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecasts across stores and corporate functions
- Monitor actual vs. budget performance and communicate variances
- Provide cost and profitability analysis to support pricing and merchandising decisions
- Oversee corporate tax compliance and multi-state tax strategy
- Manage insurance programs and enterprise risk exposure
- Partner with HR/Benefits on self-funded health plan financial performance and liabilities
- Support ESOP valuation readiness, repurchase obligation planning, and trustee reporting
- Partner with external valuation firms, auditors, and advisors
- Prepare Board and Audit Committee reporting and materials
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA required
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- 5+ years in a senior finance leadership role (Controller, VP Finance, or CFO)
- Experience in retail, grocery, and multi-location operations required
- Employee-owned (ESOP) company experience
- Union workforce or multi-labor environment exposure
- Inventory-based accounting and high-volume, low-margin business models
- Multi-state operations and tax structures
- Experience supporting Board governance and audit committees
- Strategic and data-driven decision-making
- Strong executive presence and communication skills
- Ability to translate financial insights into operational action
