Handling tax in such a large, sophisticated organization takes more than just a technical understanding of current tax practices. As a State Income Tax Manager, we’ll look to you to apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes to complex issues.
The opportunity includes tax consulting, planning, and compliance services to a diverse range of clients in various sectors. EY’s Tax practice is evolving; you will grow as you take on new skills and responsibilities with mentors and training programs.
Responsibilities- The State Income Tax Manager will oversee state-level tax projects, including compliance and related research.
- Lead and direct a team in managing state tax compliance and advisory services for clients.
- Managing and executing state income tax compliance responsibilities.
- Monitoring and analyzing changes in state income tax laws and regulations and determining the impact to the client.
- Providing complex tax review, research, planning and consulting services to diverse clients, including federal and state tax regulations.
- Leading or assisting with various tax planning, research, and special projects.
- Preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual state income tax provisions.
- Modeling various state income tax benefits and consequences using Microsoft Excel, Power
BI or Alteryx. - Writing tax technical memos to articulate issues, conclusions, and analysis on state tax matters.
- Developing and working with staff and seniors to create a team environment.
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related discipline and approximately six years of related work experience.
- High level of proficiency in state income tax code, regulations, and procedures.
- A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization.
- Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.
- Ability to analyze client data, provide technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.
- Ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.
- Strong influencing skills and the confidence to question existing processes.
- Willingness to travel as needed and ability to work in a balanced hybrid environment.
- An achieved or partially achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, or the ability to sit for or be a member of a state bar.

- Comprehensive compensation and benefits: base salary ranges vary by location. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $105,100 to $192,600; in NYC Metro Area, WA, and CA (excluding Sacramento) it is $126,100 to $218,900. Individual salaries are determined by factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. Total Rewards includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and paid time off options.
- Hybrid work model with most client-facing roles expected to work in person 40-60% of the time.
