Position: 2026-2027 Paraprofessional – Pre-K Special Education @ Gatewood

Position Summary

Provides support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.

Essential Duties
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials (e.g., art projects, computer, language skills, etc.) to support and reinforce classroom goals and objectives.
  • Administers classroom assignments to support teachers in the instructional process.
  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, providing writing assistance, reinforcing language skills, numbers, alphabet, computer learning programs, etc.) to practice and reinforce learning concepts and assist students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
  • Communicates with teachers to assist in evaluating progress and implementing classroom objectives.
  • Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files and records (e.g., cleaning/bleaching tables, sign‑in/sign‑out logs, etc.) to ensure availability of items, provide written reference, create a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs general clerical tasks (e.g., laminating, making posters, making copies, bulletin boards, filing, newsletters, etc.) to help the teacher prepare instructional materials.
  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
  • May assist in changing all students’ diapers, sanitary napkins, and clothing.
  • May assist students who need to be fed.
  • May assist with personal care, such as wiping nose or drool, hand washing, and body care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • When necessary, may work at an alternative site in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires school or office closures. Eligibility and guidelines are determined by the superintendent and distributed by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
  • High School Diploma or GED required and one of the following:
    • Tier 1:
      Completed at least 48 credit hours of college study.
    • Passed the OGET test.
    • Pass the Education Testing Service Parapro Assessment Test (passing score is 455).
    • Workkeys Assessment (passing score of 3 or better on all three parts).
  • Must obtain OSDE Paraprofessional Credential (US $10 fee).
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses pertinent software applications.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records.
  • Performs basic math; reads manuals, writes documents following prescribed formats, presents information to others, and understands complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development and learning styles, and age‑appropriate activities.
  • Ability to schedule activities, collate data, and use basic, job‑related equipment.
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals and handle a variety of data.
  • Problem‑solving skills to identify issues and create action plans.
  • Ability-based competencies: flexibility, communication with diverse groups, confidentiality, setting priorities, teamwork, and handling constant interruptions.
  • Physical ability to assist in student evacuation during emergencies.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
  • Adequate visual acuity to read and transcribe written material.
  • Normal hearing and clear speaking abilities for in‑person and telephone interactions.
  • Regular stooping, bending, stretching, and occasional lifting not to exceed 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods.
  • May occasionally work outside normal business hours, including weekends, under stressful conditions to meet business needs.
Work Environment
  • Office duties performed in a well‑lit, climate‑controlled environment.
